Hermon and Heroda Berhane, deaf twin sisters from Eriteria are breaking every barrier of being deaf. They did not not allow their disability to limit their ability and ambition. Hermon and Heroda are inspiring others through their style, by breaking stereotypes and barriers towards deaf people.

I find the story of these twin sisters very intriguing and inspiring!

Hermon and Heroda are fashion bloggers at BeingHer where they share their love for fashion, photography and culture. They are twins with different personality but one lifestyle. They are not only fashion bloggers, but have a blossoming career in modelling and acting.

They were both seven years old when they mysteriously went deaf at thesame time!
According to the twins, "We both suffered our loss of hearing under strange circumstances. We were seven years old, playing outside (in our hometown in Eritrea) one moment we could hear, the next we couldn’t. We refuse to allow being deaf to define or hold us back and we believe that being yourself is the most powerful beauty product available, so we use it.”

Earlier on, It took their parents a long time to realize the girls were deaf. “We were playing together in the backyard of our parents’ house; our mother was trying to call our names, and we did not hear at all,” they said.

“We found our identity at boarding school. Sign language was so beautiful, and the deaf community just became our family. Within the hearing world, it can be lonely. As soon as we were in that deaf world, we fitted in. It was where we belonged. Signing is physical and beautiful. It’s visual, it relies quite a lot on facial expressions and a positive vibe. We want to educate you on what sign language means and give you a sense of deaf awareness. You need to be more open minded and learn sign language. Our identity is so important to us because if we weren’t deaf, we would simply not be the way we are now. Life for us would be so different, we are proud of who we are, and our deafness is a part of that. Being deaf hasn’t held us back from doing what we want in our lives.”

“We had quite a lot of barriers throughout our life especially our careers, but we fight for it…we have to use our deafness and being black women to break these barriers. Our bond is unbreakable. We do many things, we can finish each other’s sentences, read each other’s minds and feel each other’s pain. Yes, it’s real.”

“Hermone’s acting career started when she travelled to South America and mine started when I landed a role for a television commercial. We both have blossoming careers in modelling and acting and now we have a fashion blog, ‘Being her’ is where we model affordable urban and traditional Eritrean outfits.”

“Being deaf doesn’t stop us from what we want to do because we can do anything except hear. People are hungry for real inspiration…and we want to tell them that deaf people can do it too. We want to tell people around the world that you should embrace disability, not hide from it.

“Life may not be the party we hoped for. But while we’re here we should dance”

Isn't it so beautiful how these adorable twins, Hermon and Heroda Berhane are successfully breaking every barrier of their disability, and inspiring the world through their style?
